Frosted Purpleheart Bowl
Frosted Purpleheart Bowl
If you'd like to see the full process of how this bowl was made, check out the link here: https://youtu.be/kDyQbsRiNu4
This bowl was made from small planks of purpleheart wood that were stacked together into a circular mould with small empty spaces in between. These spaces were then filled with epoxy resin dyed with a satin white mica pigment. The bowl was finished with multiple coats of a hardening wipe-on varnish, making the final product durable and water resistant (but not waterproof).

Imperfections
In terms of the building process, this piece has no imperfections. However, it should be noted that purpleheart wood is particularly sensitive to oxidization. All wood species react with oxygen over time, and in the case of purpleheart, this can result in a fairly drastic shift in colour. Typically, purpleheart is dark brown when freshly cut, but this brown will quickly turn purple if left exposed to fresh air. This piece was finished after approximately 2 days of direct air exposure. At the time, the wood was more of a reddish-purple, but more purple has appeared in the weeks since it was first finished. Buyers should be aware that the wood colour may be slightly different than what is shown in these photos, and that once purchased, the bowl's colour may continue to change slowly over time. Buyers should also be aware that all epoxy resins yellow to some degree over time. Normally, this is not a problem if dyes are added to the resin (they hide the yellowing). However, since this bowl was made with a satin white pigment, it is possible that the resin may take on a slight yellow colour as the bowl ages.
Care, Cleaning & Maintenance
It must be explicitly stated that this bowl is for decorative purposes only. While water resistant, this finish is not waterproof, and any water that does happen to get onto the bowl should be wiped off immediately and the bowl left to dry. This bowl should never be put in a dishwasher. This finish is not graded as food safe, and so it is not recommended to be used as a serving dish.
For dust and dry debris, simply use a soft microfiber cloth or towel to clean. If applying water to the towel, be sure to quickly dry the bowl off once finished. For any light scratches that may develop on the bowl with prolonged use, the original gloss can be restored by using a medium-to-high gloss wipe on hardening varnish, such as Waterlox's Original Medium Sheen formula.
