The Lava Bowl
The Lava Bowl
If you'd like to see the full process of how this bowl was made, check out the link here: https://youtu.be/GnPSWHjLydI
This bowl was made from black walnut "bricks" cast in epoxy resin dyed with a transparent red pigment. The bowl was finished with multiple coats of a hardening wipe-on varnish, making the final product durable and water resistant (but not waterproof).
Dimensions
Weight: 1.54lbs (0.70kg)
Height: 3.31" (8.41cm)
Diameter (top): 8.31" (21.11cm)
Wall Thickness: 0.5" (1.27cm)
Imperfections
During the process of attaching the walnut bricks to the inner core, some of the hot glue used to secure the bricks dripped down onto the bricks one layer down These drips, although small, can be seen on the inside of the bowl in a couple of spots. During the curing process, a couple of bricks also came loose from their position, which resulted in them being cast at a slight angle to the bricks around them.
Care, Cleaning & Maintenance
It must be explicitly stated that this bowl is for decorative purposes only. While water resistant, this finish is not waterproof, and any water that does happen to get onto the bowl should be wiped off immediately and the bowl left to dry. This bowl should never be put in a dishwasher. This finish is not graded as food safe, and so it is not recommended to be used as a serving dish.
For dust and dry debris, simply use a soft microfiber cloth or towel to clean. If applying water to the towel, be sure to quickly dry the bowl off once finished. For any light scratches that may develop on the bowl with prolonged use, the original gloss can be restored by using a medium-to-high gloss wipe on hardening varnish, such as Waterlox's Original Medium Sheen formula.
