The Ruby Emerald Bowl
The Ruby Emerald Bowl
If you'd like to see the full process of how this bowl was made, check out the link here: https://youtu.be/QuhnSHOb2CA
This bowl was made from a single board crafted from planks of redheart (or chakte kok) and red oak red oak, which were spaced out and then filled with epoxy resin dyed an emerald green. Once cured, 4 rings were turned from this board on a woodturning lathe, glued together in a stack using epoxy resin, and turned down to a bowl. The bowl was finished with multiple coats of a hardening wipe-on varnish, making the final product durable and water resistant (but not waterproof).
Dimensions
Weight: 0.79lbs (0.36kg)
Height: 2.88" (7.32cm)
Diameter (top): 9.19" (23.34cm)
Wall Thickness: 0.81" (2.06cm)
Imperfections
During the curing process, the emerald green resin overheated slightly, causing quite a few bubbles to form in the final casting. These can be seen (if you zoom into the photos) as small voids and pot marks in the finished bowl, but they are only present over the green epoxy resin.
Care, Cleaning & Maintenance
It must be explicitly stated that this bowl is for decorative purposes only. While water resistant, this finish is not waterproof, and any water that does happen to get onto the bowl should be wiped off immediately and the bowl left to dry. This bowl should never be put in a dishwasher. This finish is not graded as food safe, and so it is not recommended to be used as a serving dish.
For dust and dry debris, simply use a soft microfiber cloth or towel to clean. If applying water to the towel, be sure to quickly dry the bowl off once finished. For any light scratches that may develop on the bowl with prolonged use, the original gloss can be restored by using a medium-to-high gloss wipe on hardening varnish, such as Waterlox's Original Medium Sheen formula.
